Made it up to Rockhampton and stopping in at Juwarki Kapu-Lug Limited.
Juwarki Kapu-Lug was formed in response to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC) and provides social justice, drug and alcohol support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Rockhampton. Their primary purpose is to deliver non-judgemental assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples at risk to themselves or others. They achieve this through a number of different services including:
- Cell Visitors Service – a partnership with the Edward Chubb Diversionary Service and Queensland Police Service to minimise harm and prevent deaths in custody by providing 24/7 services to the Rockhamptom Police Watchhouse and surrounding community;
- Edward Chubb Diversionary Service – a safe, culturally appropriate and caring alternative accommodation to the Rockhampton Police Watchhouse for adult individuals who have been detained for public intoxication and who are prepared to admit themselves to the service voluntarily; and
- Elders Visitation Service – a transport service for Elders from the Rockhampton and Woorabinda to the Capricornia Correctional Centre to provide support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inmates.
