While in Townsville I took the opportunity to stop by the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service (TAIHS).
TAIHS provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in and around Townsville a wide range of health, family, and accommodation services. Their clinical and outreach health services provide general medical, counseling and mental health services for men, women and youth, allied health including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, optometry, audiology, psychology, exercise physiology, podiatry and dietetics. They also provide dental, sexual health, diabetes, and maternal and child health clinics, as well as a number of visiting specialists including psychiatry, paediatrics, endocinology, dermatology and nephrology.
In fact services for youth and families are a huge part of what TAIHS do. They offer a broad spectrum of services, from developmental health, to nutrion and exercise programs, to building healthy families through their Yamani Meta program.
TAIHS also provides a range of accommodation options for people suffering from drug or alcohol issues or homelessness. They also have a Youth Shelter that provides crisis accommodation for all young people 16-21 years of age with the possibility of assisting up to 25 years of age, no matter their circumstances or background.
If you’re an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person in or around Townsville and looking for someone to help you take care of your health and wellbeing, there isn’t much that TAIHS can’t offer you. Look them up at their website: https://www.taihs.net.au
Back on the road and heading up to Innisfail!
